Experiencing Transformation through Meditation and Mindfulness

In our personal and professional experience as yoga and meditation instructors in the charming setting of the center of  Grenade, We have witnessed the transformative power of learning meditation and mindfulness.

They are simple and accessible tools that help people connect with themselves and live the day with a little more presence.

People often have doubts about their ability to learn to meditate, but we've had the privilege of guiding numerous students, step by step, through this journey of self-discovery. Teaching how to observe the body, channel the mind's attention, and ultimately create the necessary distance between who we truly are and our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs has been a fundamental part of our work.

Through these practices, we have helped our students acquire the tools necessary to live with greater tranquility and equanimity in an often chaotic world.

If you've never tried it, start small: two sustained minutes a day are worth more than twenty once.

What usually changes with practice

You'll find very long lists online of benefits attributed to meditation, often with quite emphatic claims. We prefer to tell you only what we see in class, session after session, and leave the big promises to those who want to make them.

  • You notice it sooner. It's not that you stop getting tense or irritated, it's that you detect it a few seconds earlier than usual. Those few seconds are almost all it takes to respond instead of reacting.
  • Your mind still gets distracted, but you come back faster. Many people believe that meditating well means avoiding distractions. It's actually the opposite: the practice involves returning to the practice, and the more often you return, the better the session will be.
  • Show up for a while during the day that's yours. For many people, this is the real value and what they miss the most when they leave it: ten minutes in which nobody asks for anything.
  • You sleep with your head less fired up. That's what those who practice at night tell us most often. It's not that anything is solved, it's just that they go to bed with less noise inside.
  • You speak to yourself a little better. It's hard to explain, but a practice where no one corrects you ends up lowering the bar of expectation with which you treat yourself.

None of this happens in one session, or even two. And it doesn't happen to everyone in the same way. What is common, however, is that those who maintain the practice for a few weeks don't usually stop.

What meditation is not

It's important to state this clearly. Meditation is a practice of mindfulness and well-being. It is not therapy, it does not treat any health condition, and it does not replace any qualified professional.

And something important: if you're going through a difficult emotional time—anxiety that affects your daily life, persistent sadness, or the feeling of being overwhelmed—what you need is a mental health professional. Meditation can support this process, but it isn't the process itself, and it's not always the best approach at the beginning. By quieting the noise, what you're carrying sometimes becomes clearer. That's why, in these circumstances, it's advisable to practice with appropriate support.

We are going to detail some mindfulness meditation techniques that you could find in our center

Techniques of meditation:

  • Mindfulness Breath Meditation: Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, and direct your attention to your breathing. Observe how the air enters and leaves your body. When your mind wanders to other thoughts, gently redirect your attention back to your breathing. This practice helps develop mindfulness and awareness.
  • Body Sensation Exploration: In this technique, you consciously explore the
  • Sensations in your body. Start from your feet and move up to your head, paying attention to any tension, relaxation or sensations in each part. This encourages the connection between mind and body.
  • Body Scan Meditation: Rather than scanning specific parts of the body, the body scan involves a more general exploration. You start at one end of the body and gradually move to the other, observing sensations along the way.
  • Mindfulness Meditation: Find a quiet place and pay attention to the sounds around you. Instead of judging or labeling the sounds, simply observe them and notice how they appear and disappear. This can help you develop greater awareness of your surroundings.
  • Loving Kindness Meditation (Metta)This technique involves directing loving and kind thoughts toward yourself and others. You can begin with phrases like, "May I be well, may you be well, may we all be well." As you practice, you can extend these positive wishes to specific people.
  • Meditation on Conscious Breathing: Similar to mindfulness meditation on the breath, but here you can focus on a specific aspect of breathing, such as the sensation of air in your nostrils or the movement of your abdomen as you breathe.
  • Meditation on the Inner Observer: Observe your thoughts and emotions as an impartial spectator. Instead of identifying with them, watch them arise and pass away. This encourages self-reflection and self-awareness.
  • Meditation in the Space of Silence: Focus on the spaces of silence between sounds, thoughts, and sensations. This helps you find calm amidst the constant flow of experience.

More techniques we use in our studio

There are many more techniques that we use in our studio, based on Vipassana techniques, Kriya Yoga, Hatha Yoga, and other disciplines and philosophies, but mindfulness is a very accessible way to start.

Mindfulness is a very accessible entry point, and from there each person finds their own path. The only essential thing is to practice with some regularity: ten minutes almost every day is worth much more than an hour every two weeks.
