Meditation technique and its benefits for the mind
"Note-taking" is a meditation technique used in various mindfulness and insight meditation practices. It is one of the most powerful meditation and mindfulness techniques for increasing the strength of your concentration. What is the meditation technique called "note-taking"? When I began meditating, it was the technique that most caught my attention because of its ability to channel the mind and simultaneously discover how my thoughts work and move.
This technique involves mentally labeling or writing down the various thoughts, feelings, sensations, or experiences that arise during meditation. The purpose of writing down is to cultivate mindfulness and awareness of the present moment. It works like this:
- Choose an object of meditation: Begin your meditation by choosing a main object of attention. For example, breathing and bodily sensations are very accessible objects to focus on.
- Observe carefully: As you meditate, your mind will naturally wander and thoughts and sensations will arise. When this happens, rather than getting lost in your thoughts, acknowledge and label them. For example, if you notice your mind wandering, you can mentally say “thinking” or “wandering.” There are many categories and lines along which thoughts can be noted. It is important to work progressively along these lines, depending on the level of concentration and preparation of the practitioner.
- Be specific: It's helpful to be as specific as possible when taking notes. For example, if you're concentrating on your breathing and suddenly feel an itch in your nose, you would note "itch" or "nose itch" rather than just "sensation."
- Stay neutral: It's essential to maintain a neutral, nonjudgmental attitude while noticing. You're not evaluating or reacting to what's happening; you're simply observing and labeling. This neutrality is crucial to developing mindfulness.
- Return to the anchor: After noticing the distraction, gently return your attention to your chosen meditation object (e.g., your breathing). The process of observing helps you let go of distractions and return to the present moment.

Taking notes is an essential technique for any meditator who wants to raise their level of self-inquiry and concentration. When we know how our minds work, we will also have a greater capacity to channel their energy towards what we want to manifest in our lives, whether in the way we speak, act, manage our emotions and even what we think.
