You wake up and, before you even get out of bed, you notice your jaw is stiff. Or you've been in meetings all afternoon and suddenly realize you've been clenching your teeth for a while without noticing. The jaw is one of those areas that silently accumulates tension: it doesn't hurt until it's been strained for a long time.
Does it sound familiar? It's one of the areas we work on most in Kobido, and one of the most surprising to those who have never tried a facial massage.
Why does the jaw accumulate so much tension?
It's one of the most constantly used areas of the body: talking, eating, and for many people, unconsciously clenching their teeth during the day or while sleeping. The muscles that move it are among the most powerful in the body, so when they tense up, they really tense up. It's not uncommon for that tension to also be felt in the temples or the upper part of the neck, because everything is connected.
If you habitually clench your teeth at night or experience discomfort when opening your mouth fully, please mention it to your dentist or doctor. This is assessed and treated separately; we address the sensation of muscle tension, not the underlying cause.
How we work in this area
Kobido incorporates specific pressure and gliding techniques across the entire jaw area, working from the cheekbone to below the ear. It's a slow, sustained pressure massage, quite unlike any other type of massage you've received in that area because, quite simply, almost no one works there.
It's common to notice your jaw feels much looser afterward, and a feeling of spaciousness when you open your mouth that many people didn't expect. It's one of those effects that you notice right away and that makes people come back.
